Chopped is an American reality culinary game show, created by Michael Krupat and Dave Noll. In this fast-paced cooking show, the contestants have to create delicious dishes in a really short span of time. The contestants have to plan, prepare, cook and even serve the dishes which include the “mystery” ingredients supplied by the show. It is these “mystery” ingredients that really bring a captivating twist to the show. The participants may have to use green beans in desserts, speckled donuts in entrees and gummies in appetizers!
Initially, four chefs begin competing but only two make it to the final round of desserts. The contestants have to utilize all the ingredients that are provided by the show in every round. The chefs have to complete the challenge in a dedicated time frame which is usually about 20 – 30 minutes. The duration depends on the meal course that is being prepared. At the conclusion of each round or course, a panel comprising of 3 judges “chops” off one contestant who failed to measure up. The criterion for clearing the level, apart from completing the dish within the time frame consists of:
The last chef who clears the final round gets to take back home $10,000. The show is hosted by Ted Allen. The judges on the panel often have renowned chefs and food critics. Previously, geniuses like Geoffrey Zakarian, Maneet Chauhan, Michelle Berstein, Aaron Sanchez, Amanda Freitag, Alex Guarnaschelli, Bobby Flay, Chris Santos, Jet Tila, Anne Burell and Mac Murphy have appeared on the panel.
