How to be an Extra in a Movie

callLooking into being an extra is great way to earn some extra cash and also is a great way to help along your acting career. Lots of current stars started on this path stars ranging from Brad Pitt, to Sylvester Stallone, to Megan Fox just to name a few.  Being an extra allows you to get more familiar with the interworkings of the industry. Typically these are paid gigs and you don’t necessarily need to be SAG/AFTRA or need any type of representation.

These jobs are everywhere. There are extras in commercials, TV, theater, film and so on. In an evening of prime time television you have probably seen hundreds of extras across your television screen. Every one of those seemingly unnoticed people wandering through the background of your favorite shows has been hand selected to be there. There are no coincidences.

So where would you find these opportunities?

Looking for this kind of work actually takes a tremendous amount of leg work. The first place to look is here at, where you can find castings for extras in your local area. Of course there will be opportunities in larger markets (i.e. New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, etc.). There are also various listings throughout the internet and it helps to keep an eye on various productions and where they will be at for filming. Also, local governments will have film office websites.

These typically include a few photos that are current and reflect your current look (hairstyle, size, shape, etc.). Also, the card will include such height, weight, eye and hair color, and most importantly hobbies and special skill you may have. These specialized skill set you a part from the rest. For example, if the scene takes place on a golf course and you already know how to swing a golf club then you have an inside track, they do not have time to train someone to do this.

Lastly, there two very important things that you need to remember. First, always be prepared. If you can do some research on the type of production and bring some extra outfits that’s always a plus. Or even some product to alter your hairstyle if need be. And most important of all be punctual. Extras are a dime a dozen and you absolutely want to make a good impression. Just remember that if you are on time, you’re late.

And remember to have fun. This a great way to get your foot in the door.

Just leave a comment below if you have any further questions.  Thanks and GOOD LUCK!!!
